Online Course
For example, the online version of the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course can be accessed using any computer that is connected to the internet with a broadband connection. This can be on the farm, in a local library, internet cafe or even from the worker's own home.
Below is a description of the main features of the online course.
The Mentor
A photographic image of the HortiSafe™ mentor will appear on the screen providing instructions and guidance to each worker taking the course.
Video Clips
At the beginning of each module the worker will watch a short video clip which contains the main training information of that module.
Module Text
The main points of the training information presented in each video clip are presented in point form on the screen. This reinforces the training and helps the worker to remember it.
Exercises
After watching the video and reading the online text for a module, the worker will complete some exercises to help assess how well they have understood the training.
Course Completion and Results
Full training records will be automatically stored and available at any time. These records will include which course(s) a worker has completed, when it was completed as well as a detailed breakdown of their score. This provides valuable information on what areas, if any, a particular worker needs some help with.
Additional Features
There are additional features included in the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course that will help workers better understand the importance of safety on the farm:
Polls
Similar to those found in newspapers and during some news broadcasts, poll questions relating to OH&S on the farm have been created. An example of a poll question might be "How many workers, do you think, are killed by tractors each year?" Workers will then compare their response with other workers
(anonymously) and with the actual statistics. This may cause workers to rethink their opinions on the importance of farm safety.
Cartoons
Designed by Mentor Training (Agriculture) and sketched by a leading cartoonist, these cartoons provide variety and are sometimes humorous but pack a serious punch when it comes to teaching workers about farm safety.

Course Kit
For example, this format of the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course is designed to be delivered to workers on the farm by anyone the business owner/manager delegates to run it. This might be an OH&S rep. or senior staff member.
Below is a list of the main features of the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety Course Kit.
DVD
The DVD is the primary source of training information and contains all the modules of the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course. Each module appears as a separate chapter on the DVD menu. This enables the designated trainer to easily manage the pace of the training as he/she guides the workers through the course one module at a time.
Books
There are three different books in the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course.
- Trainer's Handbook - this book provides the trainer with instructions on conducting the course. It also provides additional information on the content of the course. The key aims of each module are provided to assist the trainer in instructing the workers. The Handbook also contains the entire Worker's Manual and Workbook (with answers).
- Worker's Manual - this book contains all the modules of the HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety course in text form. The content restates the training information the workers would have just seen in the DVD. Here, however, the trainer may discuss any or all of the points in the module and answer any questions the workers might have. The Worker's Manual also becomes a resource each worker can keep for future reference.
- Workbook - the Workbook contains exercises to help assess how well the workers have understood the training.
Course completion records
The HortiSafe™ Tractor Safety Course Kit includes important aids for documenting attendance and completion of courses by workers. Separate course attendance documents and course completion documents are provided.
Additional course components
In addition to the key course components, storage boxes for trainers and folders for workers are provided. Complimentary HortiSafe™ hats & sunglasses are provided for each worker.
